Karen WeirHi There!  Let me begin by saying it is such a delight to be joining my friends Cindy Bolley and Karen Caffrey in this blog project.  As I tell you a bit about me, I’d like to explain how the 3 of us, from 3 different parts of the world came together on this project.

I live in a small rural community in northern Alberta Canada with my husband Keith, to whom I have been married a wonderful 10 years, and our 2 children, ages 8 and 9.  We also have 2 adult daughters from previous marriages, and one grandson.   Prior to my life as an internet marketer, I worked as a child protection social worker for the Government of Alberta, so did Keith.  We are both social workers by nature, and while we enjoyed the actual work we were doing, we struggled dealing with the beauocracy. I won’t go there, but suffice it to say social workers could do much better work if they were permitted to use their common sense instead of having to make decisions based on policy.

When Keith and I got married and decided to start a new family, we agreed that we would prefer to have one of us at home with our children at least until they reach school age, but we realized it would be difficult to live on one social worker’s salary.  In Alberta, we have a 12 month maternity leave, so with 2 children, spaced 16 months apart, I was off work with pay for 2 years.  After that I took part time and temporary positions that gave some greater flexibility.

When our son was very young, he began to have some minor respiratory problems.  He had been prescribed various medications for his congestion and when he was 2, he was prescribed a ventolin puffer.  We began to search for natural alternatives to deal with, what appeared to be, allergies.  That is what got me started in network marketing.  I got involved with EcoQuest International as a result of purchasing a home air purifier.  I wasn’t looking for a business opportunity, but I was so impressed with the products that I almost felt obligated to share them with others!

I followed the advice of my upline and purchased the online marketing system for $39.95 per month, marketing materials, a success kit etc, attended team training calls and started buying leads.  It was hard work, and I was spending about $500/mo in addition to product that I had ordered for inventory.  Not only was it hard, but these so called fresh targeted leads I was calling were hostile!  I thought I was calling people who had actually requested information, but it didn’t seem to matter where I purchased leads from, they were all the same.  I had some success, but I was NOT having any fun.

Then I found the Veretekk Marketing and training system and I began to learn the craft of marketing on the internet.  I learned how to build my own website, and how to market that website to get some targeted traffic.  It didn’t happen overnight, but eventually my website was getting not only traffic, but generating sales!  Now, instead of spending money on leads, I was generating my own (and they really are targeted), and my system is paying me!  Veretekk is also an affiliate program, and it is the best training you will find anywhere.  The best thing I found at Veretekk though was the people.

This is where I met the group of people that I am currently working with, including Cindy Bolley from Michigan USA, and Karen Caffrey from Queensland Australia.  We are all members of the Prosperity Cast Network Inner Circle team.  This is truly an amazing mastermind group where we all learn from and teach each other through formal “classes” and less formal chats.  What we have done is we have created a community of like minded people - this group has really become our family.

We girls discovered that in spite of living in different countries, different life styles, and having different priorities, we had much in common as women building a business from home.  We realized that by supporting one another, we all achieve more.  As business women, we have different priorities and issues than many men working from home.  We also often have a different approach.  We decided that one way we can support each other is by contributing to a blog designed for and about women working from home.

I come from a family filled with the entrepreneurial spirit.  My mother had a very successful coffee bar and gift store until she retired a few years ago.  My younger sister has followed in her footsteps and just opened a speciality store in the small town of Mundare, Alberta.  Click here to listen to her radio ad.

My nephew is a hypnotist who puts on amazing shows across the country.  The Trevor Knight Show is becoming well known and is very entertaining. Check out his website:

This blog, by women and for women, is not intended to be sexist!  We believe that men will benefit greatly by gaining some insight into how we think and what we think… and we welcome their contributions to discussions as well!

I hope that we can provide information and support that will help the home based business woman achieve the success that she deserves and desires. We’ll share tools, resources and strategies to help get you branded and on the top of the Google search engine, as well as sharing strategies for organizing your time, and maybe the odd funny story.

    Saw your blog tonight about….

Taking credit for someone else’s work is just… _______ (please fill in the blank!)

What do you think about people who take credit for another’s work or ideas? I am seriously struggling to “get” this one folks - your help would be GREATLY appreciated!

very timely for me - I sent this to a potential client - (below) - I had asked the editor to include my name - twice I asked her - nicely.
    No response from her.

Did she do it??? You guessed it….

I am so miffed right now that I don’t really care and then the editor writes in her monthly column about how hard she works!!!! Gimme a break!

MY NOTE TO A POTENTIAL CLIENT -
Your comment: It is shaping up to be a very nice magazine.

Thank you for the compliment. It is nice to know someone is noticing.
I am going to give myself a “big pat on the back!”
Most of the changes and some of the editorial (copy and pics) are due to me.

    Oct/Nov issue:
Christmas Gift Guide - my idea

    Dec/Jan issue:
Cover stories - my suggestion to the editor
another feature story - I supplied the information to -the editor - byline reads “by (her name)
Fashionable Kids fashion feature - Although I have not been credited in the article, I gathered all the pictures and copy, and gave the information to the editor - (her name is on the article)
Arizona Travel feature - my idea

    Feb/March issue:
Home Luxuries advertising feature - my idea
Accessories Fashion feature - I gathered all but one of the editorial & pictures - I am not credited in the magazine
new Real Estate page - my idea

I suggested, and it was accepted, the entire year of EDITORIAL /advertising features for the magazine.

So I know how you feel….anyway I’m not doing anything anymore….burned by her big ego!!!

TAKING CREDIT FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS AND MORE !

I contracted to WesBank for 20 years and was working on an Oracle project that was budgeted at R55 million.

The managers who were put in charge did not have the necessary experience for the project and made some disasterous decisions were made, which almost cost us the project.

As I had 27 years in IT and had worked extensively on the design, I was the only one willing to stick my neck out and make decisions on what was required to save the project.

I was asked what I wanted in return and asked for a huge bonus and a gold silver award. I received a R100 award as employer of the quarter once the project was saved, no huge bonus.

I did not know that the CEO (Ronnie Watson) was being lied to by my managers and being told that the project was a success and only after I had saved the project and no bonus was forthcoming, did I realize what was going in.

I could not accept, what I considered to be fraud and dishonesty and took the matter to the HR General manager and the current CEO Brian Riley. The result was that the IT GM Willie Visser took the information I assed onto him and used it to his advantage and made my life a misery until I resigned. The incompetent managers retained their jobs and in fact some of them were promoted. Willie Visser won an award that year. This left me unemployed for 3 years and I became very ill.

Fortunately I have recovered, but doubt that I will ever forget what happended at WesBank or the treatment that I received for being an honest hardworking member of their team for 20 years and only ever having their best interests at heart.

The project that was budgeted at R55 million will probably cost them close to 1 billion by the time it is totally complete.

I have yearned for the truth to come out, so thank you for giving me the opportunity to share this experience with you all.
