Those words will be spoken later today when the second leg to the Triple Crown will be run, The Preakness Stakes. I hope and I pray that tragedy does not happen again as it did 2 weeks ago, the first Saturday in May. The first Saturday in May is always the running of the Kentucky Derby. I love the whole event. Not only the horses but the BIG beautiful hats. The idea of sipping on a mint juleps may sound good but the idea of drinking straight bourbon with a mint leaf added to the top for garnish would not be my idea of a good cocktail. When they sing My Ole’ Kentucky Home I always get choked up and have to fight back the tears.
This year the Kentucky Derby had a big field and only one Filly. A total of 20 horses participated. Big Brown was the favorite to win. He had a terrible post position, # 20. The way I see it at big stake races like this with so many horses in the race everyone has a chance, even the long shots.
The horses went on parade and were loaded into the starting gate. The bells rang the gates opened and they were off. 20 magnificent creature all running for the roses. What a wonderful tradition for the first Saturday in May. As expected, Big Brown crossed the finish line first, followed by the only filly in the race, Eight Belles. But from triumph to tragedy moments after Eight Belles’ second place finish she had to be euthanized, she had broken both of her front legs. How tragic and how very sad.
I will be watching the 2nd leg today of Big Brown’s quest for the Triple Crown. My thought and my prayers go out to horses such as Eight Belles and last years tragedy as well, Barbaro. I hope and pray this years race will be safe.
