It is election time in North America. Both the USA and Canada are heading to the polls to elect their next federal government. It is an interesting time. Sadly, the interest in Canadian politics is no where near the extent of the interest in the US Presidential election. Much has been said about this fact, but I wonder if that isn’t turning around just a little bit…
It appears, to me anyway, that our Canadian politicians are attempting to capitalize on the interest the US election has gained in Canada. The attack ads are more blatent than they used to be, and they seem to be using some of the same fear mongering tactics.
Recently, we’ve seen ads connecting Harper to Bush. The ad states that had Harper been in power when Bush declared war on Iraq, our troops would have been fully committed. Then there’s the Harper attack ads claiming that Dion’s ideas are dangerous. Is it working? Are we paying closer attention?
I have to admit, that I have been drawn to the US campaigns… and as a result, I am less apathetic about our own election. As late as last Thursday, when our Leader’s debate was airing at the same time as the US VP debate, I was far more interested in watching the US debate. I flipped back and forth between the two, and have to say… our’s was more interesting! What a surprise!
But what about the attack ads. What about Palin’s recent claim that Obama is “palling” with terrorists? I’m sorry to say to those of you who love Palin and McCain, I am unimpressed by this latest attack. It only serves to make them look desperate. Palin needs to be bolstering her reputation… she ought to be working on getting up to speed with the issues. I appreciate that she is a “common” person, but I have to ask… do the American people really want an unpolished “good ole girl” negotiating for them at the international level? Whatever happened to “looking Presidential”?
Just some thoughts from north of the border…
