My 8 year old daughter has been after me to allow her to have a pyjama (aka: pajama) party.  Her birthday is in the summer, and it can be hard to get  a turn out for a birthday party with vacations and such… I’ve been putting it off; for various reasons it just hasn’t been the “right” time.

Then one night last week I was putting her to bed and she brought it up again.  I told her that we would make plans the following day and she said, “let’s not forget though Mommy because we’ve been talking and talking and never doing it”.  She reminded me how long it has been since she first asked to have a pyjama party.

That night I went to bed thinking of how fast time passes by.  I was thinking that instead of creating memories of her pyjama party, my daughter’s memories will be of talking about having a pyjama party, but never getting it done.  When would it be a good time, I asked myself.  So what if the house isn’t in perfect order… or any one of the other excuses I had used.  I did want to do this for my daughter, but I wanted it to be perfect… and so the time was never right.

I decided then that now is a good time.  When my daughter got up the following morning I told her I would call her friend’s mothers and we would have a party this weekend.    The look of delight on her precious face will remain in my memory forever.

Well last night we had a pyjama party.  At this very moment, the party girls are skating in our little homemade skating rink in the back yard.  They have had such a wonderful time, I am certain that all 3 girls will reflect back on this event in the future when they are remembering their childhood.  It is these little things that make lasting memories.

They ate pizza, went skating, played Twister, watched a girly movie with hot chocolate and popcorn, stayed up late giggling and telling stories, teased and got teased by my son and his friend, got up early to pancakes and fruit salad, and went out skating again.  I also taught them Chinese skipping - so now they have a new favorite activity.  Watching my daughter play hostess, and seeing the happiness on her face has taught me a lesson!  All we have is now - no more putting off the little things that make life so good!

PS.  As I have been told by some of my American friends, I spell pyjama funny.  Apparently in the US pyjamas are pajamas… I found this interesting so I did some looking at various spellings of words - you may find it interesting too. Spelling Differences

    You do spell that funny.
I am so happy you didn’t have to wait till the house was in perfect order for your little one to have a PAJAMA Party.
If I waited for my house to be in perfect order I would never get anything done.
Your right she will remember how special that was.
I am sure she is thinking, “I have the Best Mom.”

And in my opinion, She does.

This is so true. As we grow older we sometimes forget the importance of these things to our child. we forget how important it was to us. But these are truly the things that we remember. Very nice Post.

The other day my boy (2 yrs old) was saying bubba bubba and was quite persistent. I didn’t know what he wanted, but took the time to understand he was pointing toward the bottle of bubbles that you blow into the air. So we started blowing bubbles in the kitchen and he laughed and played with the bubbles. Who knows - maybe that will be one of the times he remembers when he grows up - playing with bubbles in the kitchen. The little things are important and don’t take long, just a little effort. Last but not least, a little plug for my website: Warner Robins Real Estate Website
